AC noises and what they mean

Which sounds are normal, which mean turn it off now, and what you can safely check.
A new sound from your air conditioner is often the first sign of a failing part. Here is what the common sounds usually mean, so you know whether to keep an eye on it or turn the system off and call.

The short version
- Some sounds are normal. A click at start and stop, a low hum, air moving, and a soft gurgle are usually fine.
- Turn it off for these: buzzing with the fan not spinning, grinding, squealing, banging, a loud hum with nothing starting, or any burning smell.
- Running a noisy system can turn a small repair into a big one. A capacitor is cheap. A compressor is not.
- Safety first. Do not open the electrical panel. Capacitors can hold a charge even with the power off.
What each sound usually means
| Sound | Usual cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Gurgling or running water | Often normal at start-up or shut-down. Steady gurgling with water near the indoor unit can mean a partly blocked drain. | Check for water. Leak guide |
| Hissing | Can be a refrigerant leak at the coil or lines, or air escaping from a duct. | Call if cooling is weak or there is ice |
| Buzzing at the outdoor unit, fan not spinning | Often a failing capacitor or contactor. | Turn it off and call |
| Clicking | One click at start and stop is normal. Rapid, repeated clicking can mean an electrical or control problem. | Call if it repeats |
| Squealing or screeching | Often a worn fan or blower motor bearing. | Turn it off and call |
| Grinding | Motor bearings or a part rubbing. | Turn it off and call |
| Banging or clanking | Something loose or broken: a fan blade, a mount, or a problem inside the compressor. | Turn it off and call |
| Rattling | Loose panels or screws, or debris inside the outdoor unit. | Check for debris with the power off |
| Loud humming, nothing starts | A motor or compressor trying to start, often a failed capacitor. | Turn it off and call |
This is a guide, not a diagnosis. The same sound can have different causes; our technicians check with gauges and meters before replacing anything.
What you can safely check
- Turn the thermostat to Off if the sound is on the "turn it off" list.
- Look at the outdoor unit from outside it. Sticks, leaves or yard debris in the fan can rattle. Switch the power off at the disconnect before clearing anything.
- Check the filter. A clogged filter can make the blower strain and whistle.
- Look for water or ice around the indoor unit and on the copper lines.

Good questions. Straight answers.
Why does my AC sound like running water?+
A soft gurgle or trickle when the system starts or stops is often refrigerant moving or water draining, and is usually normal. If it is constant, or you see water around the indoor unit, the drain may be partly blocked. See AC leaking water.
Why is my outdoor AC unit buzzing but the fan is not spinning?+
That is often a failing capacitor or contactor. Turn the system off at the thermostat and call. Running it like that can damage the compressor.
Is it normal for my AC to click?+
A single click when the system turns on or off is the relay or contactor and is normal. Fast, repeated clicking, or clicking without the system starting, can mean an electrical problem.
Can I fix a noisy AC myself?+
You can switch the power off and clear leaves or sticks from around the outdoor unit, and replace a dirty filter. Do not open the electrical panel or touch the capacitor: it can hold a dangerous charge even with the power off.
