Ice on your refrigerant lines in the middle of a 95° Florida afternoon looks impossible — and it is one of the most common calls we get all summer. The physics is simple: when something starves the evaporator coil of either airflow or refrigerant pressure, its temperature drops below freezing, and the humid Florida air passing over it becomes ice. The ice then blocks even more airflow, which makes more ice. Left running, the cycle ends at the compressor — the most expensive part in the machine.
Do this first, before you call anyone
Switch the system OFF and the fan to ON. The fan moves warm air across the coil and thaws it without stressing the compressor. Let it thaw fully — an hour or two — then check the air filter. A choked filter is the cause in a huge share of cases, the fix is free, and if the system runs normally on a clean filter, you may be done.
The four causes, in the order we find them
- 1. A clogged air filter — starves the coil of airflow. Check it first, always.
- 2. A low refrigerant charge — a slow leak drops the pressure in the coil, and low pressure means low temperature. This one refreezes after you thaw it, and it needs gauges to confirm and a leak search to actually fix. On older systems, see what the R-410A phase-out means for that repair decision.
- 3. A dirty evaporator coil — years of dust act like a blanket, and Florida humidity glues it on. Needs a proper cleaning, not a rinse.
- 4. Blocked or undersized return air — crushed flex duct, furniture over returns, or ductwork that was never right. This is the sneaky one; it is also why our maintenance visits include a duct and return-air check.
The rule of thumb: if it froze once and a new filter fixed it, breathe easy. If it freezes a second time, the cause is almost certainly refrigerant or coil related, and running it will cost you a compressor.
